The 39th annual Kids Fishing Derby hosted by the Scarborough Kiwanis Club will be held Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Bayley's Camping Resort! 🎣 (Rain date: Saturday, May 9.) This event is open to children 4 to 15 and must be accompanied by an adult. Adults are encouraged to bring a food donation (i.e. canned or other nonperishable food, etc.) or a $5 donation.
Last week, players from the Hearts of Pine Soccer Club visited Kaler Elementary! ♥️🌲⚽ They taught students the Hearts of Pine cheer, played a soccer game against the Kaler Cougar, answered student questions, and talked about the importance of teamwork.
The South Portland Middle School Staff Talent Show and Field Trip Fundraiser is one week away: Thursday, April 30th, from 5:30-7 p.m.! Students from the University of New England visited 5th grade science classrooms to explore the solar system! 💫 Using Stellarium, a planetarium app, students tracked different constellations to see when they are visible throughout the year.
The South Portland High School Math Team recently competed in the Maine State Math Meet at the Augusta Civic Center! Overall the team placed 14th and were led by Quinn Gross who placed 1st in 9th graders in the state with 64 out of 72 points! Quinn's performance also placed him 19th overall amongst all competitors.

The Maine Celtics Playbook Initiative is an anti-discrimination and bias-prevention program that inspires a dialogue on race, religion, gender, disability and sexual orientation and ultimately equips kids with the tools to intervene in challenging social situations. From South Portland Schools, Jose and Kaleb were lead trainers and Jensy and Jucelia were assistant ambassadors for the program. Together, the four led workshops with 25 middle school students addressing discrimination, bias and bullying. During these workshops, they were able to help middle schoolers navigate real-life social scenarios, build confidence, and strengthen their school communities.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” This is what South Portland Middle School students explored during Career Day! Presenters from different industries–including nursing, dentistry, martial arts, meteorology, banking, media, public safety, advertising, videography, and many more–visited 5th and 6th grade classes to answer questions and talk about their career paths. (A furry friend even joined from the Office of State Fire Marshal!) Career Day ended with an exciting keynote speech from Sea Dogs General Manager, Jesse Scaglion, who spoke about all the various careers involved in the sports industry.
