Last Thursday, Locker Project celebrated the successful completion of the new South Portland High School (SPHS) food pantry: the Little Kitchen.
Thanks to the incredible partnership and support from Hannaford Supermarkets, Locker Project was equipped to build a permanent home for the Little Kitchen, complete with ample food, substantial shelving, and refrigeration/freezing capacity.
We are profoundly grateful to Hannaford Supermarkets for helping ensure South Portland students and families will have consistent access to food for years to come.
The name “Little Kitchen” honors the rapid-response pantry created by SPHS students to support peers and their families sheltering in place this past school year. Working alongside school staff and community members, students built a grassroots mutual aid effort to provide fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, bread, toiletries, and other basic necessities to those in need.
Thank you to teachers Tasha Graff, Carmen Caterina, and Libby Newhouse, and to students Alex
Davison, Angela Kabisa, Alana Joyce Igiraneza, and Mackenzie Smart, for your dedication.
Special shoutouts to Althea Turner, SPHS social worker; Karen Brenner, SPHS Clerk; and Reel Omran, a SPHS junior who dedicated many hours to maintaining the pantry over the last several months.
Together, we are building a stronger, more food-secure community.
