South Portland Adult Education (SPAE) is excited to launch the English for Healthcare Institute (EHI), an intensive pilot program designed to help adult learners build the English, workplace, and academic skills needed to pursue healthcare careers and training programs. Offered in partnership with Southern Maine Community College and the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce Healthcare Industry Workforce Partnership, EHI combines contextualized English instruction, healthcare learning, career exploration, and industry-recognized certifications.
The first cohort of 16 students from across Maine began this week. Through small-cohort online learning and personalized support, students will develop skills in medical terminology, workplace communication, healthcare workplace culture, and career exploration. Maine healthcare employers will share their experiences, while SMCC staff will introduce healthcare programs, enrollment, and campus supports. Students will also have the opportunity to earn First Aid/CPR/AED and Bloodborne Pathogens certifications.
“Growing our collaboration with both our local community college and healthcare employers exemplifies our commitment to providing adult learners with relevant and accessible learning experiences that help them reach their fullest potential,” said Erin Krivicky, Director of Adult Education.
