Message from the Superintendent 3/3/26

Hello SPSD Families,

I am writing this afternoon to provide you with a couple of important updates. Please find:

  • New Information Related to Snow Days and Remote Learning

  • Budget Update from the School Board Budget Workshop

Thank you to those who were able to join us at the Board Budget Workshop I on March 2, 2026.  At the beginning of that meeting we shared an update related to moving from “snow” days (should we experience another inclement weather day and “remote” days.)  I am personally hoping that we are done with any more weather-related events!

Below you will find the Snow Days and Remote Learning information, and as well, a link to a brief video sharing an overview of the School Budget Workshop I slides and presentation.

Snow Days and Remote Learning

Winter is not finished with us yet! With that in mind, we are putting the following plan in place for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year:

If SPSD calls for a school cancellation during the week of March 2-6, it will be a traditional snow day. This will be Snow Day number 5.

If there is a need to cancel school during the week of March 9 or later, the district will declare a remote learning day.

Remote Learning Expectations for Students:

Grades K-6: Your student will receive a Remote Learning Packet from their teacher. This packet includes two days’ worth of work.

Please keep these packets in a safe place and keep them until a Remote Learning Day is called by the district.

The work labeled “Day 1” should be completed during the first Remote Learning Day. Students should bring the work to school the next day and hand it in. This will be used to take student attendance on the Remote Learning Day.

The work labeled “Day 2” should be used in the event of a second Remote Learning Day.

Grades 7-12: Remote learning for students in grades 7-12 will include at least 30 minutes of live, online instruction, plus additional work to be posted by teachers in Google Classroom.

Each school will provide a specific schedule for when students should join their online class for the day. Attendance will be taken during this class meeting and used for daily attendance on the Remote Learning Day.

Work will be posted in Google Classroom by 9:00 am. Students are expected to complete this work during the day.

Food Service on Remote Learning Days: In the event that we can anticipate a Remote Learning Day one day in advance, students will be able to take meals home from school for the following day. Please fill out the Lunch Request form if you would like a meal sent home for the Remote Learning Day.

If weather predictions do not allow for food to be sent home in advance, it will be made available to families from South Portland High School from 10-11 a.m. during the Remote Learning Day. More information will be provided if a Remote Learning Day is called by the district.

Budget Update: Board Budget Workshop I - March 2, 2026

There was a large audience in attendance including many staff and parents.  The Leadership Team presented an extensive presentation in response to the Board’s February 9 Request to the team to “produce a formal proposal related to the  benefits and  impact of the elementary school reconfiguration” for presentation at the March 2nd workshop.

Please find a brief video below with an overview of the night’s presentation.

With best wishes,

Dr. George Entwistle
