Message from the Superintendent

Dear SPSD Families,

As we enter the winter months, I want to take a moment to reaffirm a core value that guides every decision we make: everyone belongs in South Portland Schools. This year our district theme is, “Belong Here, Achieve Anywhere.” This is more than a statement, it is a commitment to creating a safe, supportive environment where every student, family, and staff member feels known, valued, and included.

Unfortunately we hear other sentiments and see actions, even in the news today, that run in stark contrast to our school community’s commitment to belonging.  In recent weeks too, I know that many in our community have experienced uncertainty created by national and local conversations about immigration. For some families, these conversations can create real fear and confusion. I want to be clear about our position as a school district:

Our schools are welcoming places for all students, regardless of immigration status.

Every child has the right to access a high-quality education in a space where they feel secure. Our focus remains on providing that space, ensuring that every learner can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.

To support our community during this time, we are taking several steps:

1. Reinforcing Our Commitment to Safety and Respect

We will continue to uphold strong policies that protect student privacy and ensure that all students feel safe within our schools. Acts of discrimination, bullying, harassment, or intimidation will not be tolerated. Every student deserves to be treated with dignity. I remind you of our harmful language protocols as a resource.

2. Expanding Communication and Support for Families

We continue to work with school counselors, family liaisons, and community organizations to provide resources for families who may have questions or concerns. In partnership with the University of Maine’s Refugee and Human Rights Clinic, we are planning a virtual training session (for community, family, and staff), and another virtual session tailored specifically for staff.

This includes multilingual communication, access to information about student rights, and connections to local services. I wanted to reshare this family communication guide as a resource.

3. Strengthening Classroom Practices That Foster Belonging

We are committed to inclusive classrooms where diverse backgrounds and experiences are seen as strengths. Our Equity Commitments remain at the core of our work.  These state:

  • We believe in the unlimited capacity of all students, and hold all students to high expectations

  • We use data to drive equity and close opportunity gaps

  • We use our resources, especially time, with urgency and intentionality in pursuit of excellence for all students

  • We embrace our responsibility and capacity to make a difference in our students’ lives

  • We commit to interrupting injustice, and take action for equity

4. Encouraging Our Community to Care for One Another

One of our greatest assets is the compassion of our students, staff, and families. I encourage each of us to model empathy, listen generously, and extend kindness, especially to those who may be feeling vulnerable.

Belonging is not simply a feeling; it is something we build together through daily actions and shared responsibility. When we honor the dignity of every member of our school community, we create the conditions for students to learn confidently and to carry that confidence with them wherever they go.

With warm wishes and thanks,

Dr. George Entwistle
