The South Portland School Department's Transportation Department hires licensed school bus drivers. Interested applicants should submit an application at the South Portland School Department Central Office: 130 Wescott Road, South Portland, Maine 04106. Applicants must have clean driving records for the last three years and have a clean criminal record. Extensive background checks are required along with fingerprinting, pre-employment drug/alcohol testing and State of Maine School Bus physical exams. Any criminal record or history of child or drug abuse is disqualifying for employment.
Permanent School Bus Drivers typically work an eight-hour day. There is a rotating list where permanent drivers are considered for any sports/field trips. Permanent drivers qualify for many benefits including medical. Many drivers appreciate the school work calendar which matches that of their school-aged children. Others appreciate the opportunity to attend college classes mid-day and in the evenings while they work part time. Many of our drivers have been driving for us over 10 years. If you enjoy working with children, then this is a great job for you.
If you are interested in becoming a certified bus driver, consider joining one of our classes to receive a driver permit. Classes are held every two months and are only four days long. You must register in advance by calling the transportation department at 207-767-7714. The Maine Department of Transportation administers the exam and issues permits that are accepted at any school district in Maine.
