Facilities

The Facilities department is made up of approximately forty custodians, maintenance staff, an office manager and Director. Through the efforts of these dedicated staff, and a variety of contractors, we maintain the schools, grounds and all of the assets within them. The Facilities Department is also responsible for the security and safety of our schools.

Every school day buildings are cleaned and sanitized. The security system helps keep buildings safe both while children are in school and when they are unoccupied. Community organizations or businesses who wish to use our facilities should consult our Facilities Use page.

The South Portland Schools Facilities Department uses a preventative maintenance program to help ensure our equipment is working correctly. We work with the District Safety Committee to provide for the safe storage and disposal of hazardous and e-waste materials. Our goal is to provide an environment that is healthy, safe, and comfortable for all.

Testing for Lead in Drinking Water in Schools

The Maine Legislature has mandated that all K-12 schools in Maine test their drinking water for the presence of lead. The Drinking Water Program has been charged with coordinating the effort.  These are the results of testing in South Portland Schools.

Radon Testing in Maine Public Schools

Maine school districts are required under the Radon Registration Act to test every 5 years for radon. The school department hired a person registered with the division of environmental health within the Department of Health and Human Services under the Radon Registration Act to test an occupied elementary school or secondary school. These are the results of testing in South Portland Schools.

Soil Testing of the Grounds at Kaler Elementary & South Portland High School

During the spring of 2022, the South Portland School Department, out of abundance of caution, decided to test soil samples of schools that are closest in proximity to oil tank farms.  These are the results of testing on the referenced school properties.
