Criminal History Record Check (CHRC)

CHRC Approval (Fingerprinting) Instructions

Most jobs in Maine schools require a Criminal History Record Check (CHRC)

CHRC is a two part process:

The first step is to register online with IdentoGo. There is a non refundable $55 fee, which is not reimbursed by the school department, and which requires a credit/debit card. The location of the fingerprinting is 185 Lancaster Street in Portland.

After you have made an appointment there are two ways to proceed:

Come to Central Office at 130 Wescott Road, South Portland Monday-Friday between 7:30a.m.-4:00p.m. We will assist you with the steps and fax your information to the Department of Education. This method requires that you have a credit/debit card, but is typically the most expedient way to receive your CHRC authotization.

If coming to Central Office is not practical, you may complete the Application for Initial Educational Approval. Mail the application with a $15 check or money order payable to Treasurer, Secretary of State, to Maine Department of Education, Certification Office 23 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0023 You may also elect to pay via credit/debit card within the Application itself. A temporary card is typically issued within two weeks. A permanent card will be issued to you after your prints have been processed.

Your CHRC card is valid for 5 years. The cost to renew is $39 if you have not had 5 years of continuous employment in a Maine school. If you’ve been continuously employed the renewal fee is $15.* The Maine Department of Education does NOT send you a renewal reminder.** For the most up to date information on renewals, please visit the DOE website.

*South Portland Schools will pay for the renewal of Food Service, Transportation, Maintenance and Custodial employees.

**It can take up to three months or more to receive a renewal if your card lapses (more than thirty days past expiration date).
