December 1, 2005

Present: Ralph Baxter Jr., Ralph Baxter Sr., Mark Reuscher, Steve Bailey, Wendy Houlihan, Kathy Germani, Mark Lee, Jeanne Crocker, Dan Cecil, Carrie Hall-Indorf, Dennis Welch, Megan Welter, Dave Brochu

1.Welcome


2.Approval of minutes from November 10, 2005 meeting.

  • Approved

    3. Review and Feedback from Community Forums

  • Knightville Forum was "great".Good questions, good group.

  • Wendy handed out Feedback sheets through the Knightville Forum.

  • Dyer will be made up. Cancelled due to power outage. New date is December 13, 2005 at Dyer, at 6:00 p.m..

  • Wendy to go to Student Senate next week

    4. Review of Rating Forms provided by Wendy and Dan

  • Dan handed out an additional sheet that included Hawthorne School in Brunswick

  • Reviewed and commented on list. Two schools made it, two schools didn't - ratings were compared
  • Dan spoke on each component of each school

  • Things learned:
    • 40 categories (3 major headings)
      • A - Buildings and Grounds

      • B - School Population

      • C - Program and Planning

    • Schools using portables score well

    • 1/10 of a point could make a difference between getting on the list or not

    • South Portland High School probably would not make the list based on the knowledge of other school


    5.Review of Draft thoughts for presentation to Board of Education at the January 9, 2006 meeting

  • After much discussion, the committee voted on 3 possible recommendations:
    a. Bond all 3 schools (Received 1 vote)
    b. Apply for state funding on all 3 schools (Received 2 votes)
    c. Apply for state funding for middle schools and bond high school (Received 8 votes)

  • Discussion followed. Committee would be unanimous in presenting to School Board option C

    6. Proposed meeting dates for 2006

  • Schedule was handed out

    7.Next meeting date: December 15, 2005 from 6:30PM to 8:30PM in the SPHS Library.

  • Steve and Wendy will bring to the committee a proposal of the report to the Board of Education for their January 9, 2006 meeting
