How will the students’ educational environment improve?
The proposed project will provide:
- Flexible classroom grouping arrangements designed to meet the 21 st century educational needs of our students.
- Increased area in new classrooms to meet state standards. The size of the existing classrooms within renovated areas will also be increased (most fall short of those standards).
- Current technology will be integrated into each classroom.
- Improved air quality.
- Improved lighting and natural lighting.
- Better electrical power distribution and flexibility.
How Does the Project Improve…
- Sufficient classrooms for students in all content areas will expand learning opportunities that include project-based studies combining learning groups, flexible grouping for learning, and anticipated new courses of study aimed at preparing students for 21st century expectations.
- Updated facilities will promote the use of present and future technologies by staff and students.
- Return of off-site education programs into the building
Information Technology Systems?
- In general, technology for renovated spaces will be upgraded to match technology with newly constructed spaces.
- The goal would be to get on the network anywhere in the building including the cafeteria, auditorium, main lobby, ATM Room, and various Project Rooms.
- Basic classrooms will accommodate wireless technology supplemented by a hard wire system, including video projectors and SMART board technology.
- The Robotics program has proven to be a huge success, and is currently housed in a stand-alone structure in the general parking lot. Interest in the program has expanded over the years, and the robotics team competes regularly with other regional schools. The intent is to incorporate the robotics program within the body of the school, expand the program to meet increased student participation, and allow for convenient access by all students from within the building.
What is the construction schedule? How will the construction be phased to minimize disruption of the educational programs?
- Construction may start as early as January 2009 with full occupancy in fall of 2012.
- The process will require three distinct construction phases, and will require use of temporary classrooms for a small portion of Phase 2. Refer to the phasing drawings posted on ssfc.spsd.org for detailed information.
How does the plan accommodate future growth and changes in programs?
- Proposed additions and renovations will provide more space and the flexibility needed to meet future educational needs and anticipated population functions.
How does the present school lack adequate and/or appropriate space?
- The present school lacks enough classrooms, offices, computer labs, and meeting spaces to meet educational needs.
- Areas (including some classrooms, offices, conference rooms, locker rooms for physical education and athletics, family and consumer science and shop rooms) are inadequate in size, ventilation, electrical, heating, etc
